Do you find yourself shaking your head in frustration at the turbulent times of this world we live in? When you watch the evening news and hear of terrorists who’ve taken hostages and threatened to behead them if their demands aren’t met and then you see the reports over the next few days that they have, do you wonder what in the world is going on? Do you wonder how and why these individuals get away with such atrocities? Do you hear of the misdeeds of others spread all over the news for us to learn about and cringe at and wonder how human beings can act so sinfully and ruthlessly?  Do you see all these things on the news or in the papers or hear about them on the radio and ever wonder how the name of Jesus Christ will ever be honored as it should?

Last week we studied the importance of humility in the church and how it’s through humility that we achieve unity. I think most believers need encouragement in this area of the Christian life. You might think you already have this area pretty well mastered but I’d venture to guess we all could improve our measure of humility.

All ten of us

A shot of the whole family by Lake Michigan at the Grand Traverse Lighthouse. A friendly lady offered to take our picture here. We don’t get too many shots of us all together.

Grand Traverse Lighthouse

We visited this spot during our vacation in August 2004. We spent a few hours here and enjoyed a picnic together and even enjoyed the view from inside the lighthouse tower.

Turkeys go to church

Another one of the simple pleasures of living in Northern Michigan. I found these curious turkeys checking out their reflections in the back doors of the church this morning. I informed them that it was Thursday and that Sunday School was in three days at 10 AM.

Philippians series updated

I’ve been a bit behind lately getting my sermon transcripts posted but I’m all up-to-date as of today. Yesterday’s sermon in the Philippians series is here as well as previous weeks sermons in the series preached at Higgins Lake Baptist Church.

Unity Through Humility – Philippians 2:3-4

Is humility a necessity for unity? Do I really need to show any humility with my family to truly be unified? Can’t I just be the “king of the jungle” and still have unity? At work, everybody knows I’m the boss—if they want their paycheck signed they’d better be unified under me—why should I show any humility? Can’t we be unified as a church without all this humility stuff?

A high school orchestra was preparing for a concert that featured a pianist in a rendition of Grieg’s A-minor concerto. Before the performance, it was customary for the orchestra to tune up with an “A” sounded by the oboe player. But the oboist was a practical joker, and he had tuned his instrument a half step higher than the piano. You can imagine the effect. After the pianist played a beautiful introduction, the members of the orchestra joined in. What confusion! Every instrument was out of tune with the piano.

Atop the dune

Atop_the_Dune.jpg

I promised proof I’d climbed the dune. Here’s a shot of the beautiful scenery from atop the dune climb at Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore on Michigan’s northwest coast. We enjoyed our climb and the descent on the steep sands was fast. It was a wonderful day of about 70°F and windy. The sand blowing across the top of the dune was like hundreds of tiny needles hitting our legs. Our fun on the dunes was one more reason we were exhausted after our week of camping.
