Happy 18th Kevin Michael

Kevin Alan and Kevin Michael - 18 years ago
Eighteen years ago today we were celebrating the birth of our first child. Kevin was only a few days old in this photo. Things have changed — he’s much bigger now — and I look much older. We are so blessed by God’s gift to us in our eldest son.

Stick with the Bible when warned of “earth-shattering” calamities

David Wilkerson has grabbed attention for his recent declaration that “AN EARTH-SHATTERING CALAMITY IS ABOUT TO HAPPEN”. John Piper has weighed in with sound advice that we best “stick with the Bible”.

Says John Piper:

So my take on this prophetic word is that the scare will probably do good for a lot of people. The Bible is a scary book. And the future that is coming on unbelievers is scary beyond anything any preacher could conjure up.

But my own effort to be discerning says: Stick with the Bible, David. It is scary enough. And it is absolutely true. And your credibility will never fall.

Pray for the family and church of Pastor Fred Winters

Pastor Fred WintersThanks to Justin Taylor reminding us to pray for the family and church of Pastor Fred Winters who was shot and killed while preaching yesterday morning.

More information from Justin Taylor:

This morning a gunman opened fire during the church service of First Baptist Church of Maryville, IL (about 20 minutes from downtown St. Louis), killing the senior pastor, Fred Winter. Rev. Dr. Winters was in the pulpit at the time. He sought to shield the bullets with his Bible, but died from a gunshot wound to his chest. The shooter’s gun jammed, and he stabbed himself with a knife. Others were injured in an attempt to restrain him. At this time only one death has been reported.

Dr. Winters had been their Senior Pastor since 1987, the same year that he was married to his wife Cindy Lee. He received a BA from Southwest Baptist University (1986), an MA in Systematic Theology and Church History from Wheaton (1986), an MDiv from Midwestern Baptist Theological Seminary (1991), and a PhD from The Southern Baptist Theological Seminary. He was the former president of the Illinois Baptist State Association and an adjunct professor at Midwestern Baptist Theological Seminary.

He is survived by his wife and two children, Alysia Grace and Cassidy Hope.

Please pray for his family, for this family of brothers and sisters in Christ, and for the unnamed gunman.

What’s up with Facebook

Facebook.comWhat’s up with this thing called Facebook? The social networking site Facebook has become a popular place for teens and adults alike to stay in touch with friends, catch-up with old friends and make new friends. Having been asked about Facebook more than once I’m sharing here a few links to articles that may be helpful to you if you are a parent with a teen who wants to use Facebook or already does or if you are thinking about creating an account for yourself.

But first here’s my disclaimer. I don’t use Facebook the way many do. I don’t have time. And that would be my caution. Facebook can be a huge black hole for your time that could be and should be better used elsewhere. About the only thing I use the social networking site for is for sharing a few important links and updates with those who have “friended” me. But I don’t even login to Facebook to do this because I use third party tools to pull updates from this site and my Twitter feed which are automatically posted to my Facebook account. I think Twitter is a simpler and cleaner option than Facebook for staying up-to-date with friends and it’s much more easily made private. But that’s another post.

These will help you get started with Facebook.

These should help get you started. Share links in the comments if you have something else that will help newcomers to Facebook.
