Philippians 4:20 Now to our God and Father be glory forever and ever. Amen. 21 Greet every saint in Christ Jesus. The brethren who are with me greet you. 22 All the saints greet you, but especially those who are of Caesar’s household. 23 The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with you all. Amen.

Putting Others First – Philippians 4:14-19

Let’s look at the scriptures together—Philippians 4:14-19.

Philippians 4:14 - Nevertheless you have done well that you shared in my distress. 15 Now you Philippians know also that in the beginning of the gospel, when I departed from Macedonia, no church shared with me concerning giving and receiving but you only. 16 For even in Thessalonica you sent aid once and again for my necessities. 17 Not that I seek the gift, but I seek the fruit that abounds to your account. 18 Indeed I have all and abound. I am full, having received from Epaphroditus the things sent from you, a sweet-smelling aroma, an acceptable sacrifice, well pleasing to God. 19 And my God shall supply all your need according to His riches in glory by Christ Jesus.

Living By God’s Power – Philippians 4:13

We’ve been discussing over the last few weeks the ingredients of contentment that we find here in Philippians 4. There are a few choice ingredients that will be present in the life of a believer who is content.

We noted in verse 10 that the contented believer will have the ingredient of complete confidence in God’s power. Complete confidence in God’s power is a foundational ingredient to contentment.

As the story goes, a monk joined a monastery and took a vow of silence. After the first 10 years his superior called him in and asked, “Do you have anything to say?”

Satisfaction With God’s Provision – Philippians 4:11

We began discussing last week the recipe for contentment. We noted that to know contentment in the Christian life we’re going to have to have complete confidence in God’s power. That’s what we called, during our last study, the first ingredient to contentment—really it’s the foundation to contentment—complete confidence in God’s power.

Confidence in God’s Power – Philippians 4:10

We come today to a new theme introduced by Paul that I think you can see clearly as you read Philippians 4:10-19. The theme that he brings to the attention of the Philippian believers in the next few verses is contentment. We are just leaving the section beginning in chapter 4 verse 1 and ending in verse 9 where we’ve learned what it takes to stand fast and be stable as followers of Christ.

Right Living – Philippians 4:9

My brother Ken wrote this not too long ago:

Pastor Chen spent eighteen years in a prison work camp in China. Because he came from a background of moderate wealth and opportunity the guards at the camp worked hard to break his spirit and indoctrinate him. He was so hungry at times that he was tempted to eat toothpaste. He was separated from his wife and his young church. While he was in prison, his wife died.

Right Thinking – Philippians 4:8

For several weeks now in our study in Philippians we have been talking about standing fast in the Lord.  In the first verse of chapter four we are told to “stand fast in the Lord.” It is important for followers of Christ to be steadfast, mature and spiritually stable. If we are going to be effective and fruitful believers then we need to be standing fast—stable in the Lord.

The Cure for Worry – Philippians 4:6-7

Have you ever had a problem with worry? Or should I say, do you have a problem with worry? It’s easy to worry, isn’t it?

When Lincoln was on his way to Washington to be inaugurated, he spent some time in New York with Horace Greeley and told him an anecdote which was meant to be an answer to the question which everybody was asking him: Are we really to have Civil War? In his circuit riding days, Lincoln and his companions, riding to the next session of court, had crossed many swollen rivers. But the Fox River was still ahead of them; and they said one to another, “If these streams give us so much trouble, how shall we get over Fox River?”

Gentleness Known – Philippians 4:5

This week most of us probably witnessed the death of Terri Schiavo played out in the media. It seems that there is a great division over this issue of whether it was justice or injustice to allow Terri to die.

It is very hard to understand when you hear of her responsiveness to those who interacted with her on a regular basis and when you read the affidavits of those who cared for Terri over the years—it is beyond my imagination how any thinking person could say that she wanted to die.  I personally feel like there was a great injustice done toward Terri. I have feelings that tell me she was not “allowed” to die but was intentionally starved to death and killed.

How to Rejoice – Philippians 4:4

Last week we looked at the importance of standing fast by pursuing peace in our relationships with other believers. We saw the situation between two women who were not at peace with one another and realized the importance of pursuing peace with others in order to stand fast in the Lord. This morning we’ll be looking at Philippians 4:4.

Pursue Peace – Philippians 4:2-3

Stand fast – that’s what we saw last week in verse 1 of Philippians 4. Paul says…

Philippians 4:1 Therefore, my beloved and longed-for brethren, my joy and crown, so stand fast in the Lord, beloved.

As followers of Christ we are to be steadfast. We ought to be pictures of stability to the world around us. A faithful Christian should be stable and secure and immovable by Satan and the wickedness that so easily entangles the world.

That sounds great doesn’t it? It sounds wonderful.

But in reality standing fast is one of those spiritual disciplines that’s easier preached than practiced.

Stand Fast – Philippians 4:1

Of being steadfast it has been said that…

There aren’t any hard-and-fast rules for getting ahead in the world—just hard ones.

Let me share a few more quotes with you that may teach us a thing or two about being steadfast. It’s been said that “In order to live off a garden, you practically have to live in it” (Kin Hubbard).

It’s also been said that, “You don’t have to lie awake nights to succeed. Just stay awake days” (Healthways).

There’s a Japanese Proverb says that, “There is no poverty that can overtake diligence.”

And you know – “Triumph is just umph added to try.”

Our Heavenly Home and Hope – Philippians 3:20-21

Last week in our study in Philippians we saw the enemies of the cross of Christ described by Paul. It’s not exactly a pleasant task to examine the enemies of the cross described by Paul and to consider their future. But as we noted last time they are living for self and they glory in things that should bring shame and their end is destruction. While not enjoyable it ought to be sobering to realize what is in store for those who don’t have a relationship with Jesus Christ.

Enemies of the Cross of Christ – Philippians 3:18-19

Good examples are important aren’t they? There was a Christian father who was explaining to his little boy what a Christian is—in his innocence the youngster looked up and said, “Dad, have I ever seen a Christian?”

Good examples are powerful as well. Mark Twain once said that “few things are harder to put up with than the annoyance of a good example.” Doesn’t it bug you when you aren’t quite doing something as well or with as much dedication as you ought to and you look over at the next person who’s giving their all?

Today we’ll be looking in a moment at Philippians 3:17, but I’d like to look first for a moment at 1 John 2:6.

He who says he abides in Him ought himself also to walk just as He walked.

Pressing On – Philippians 3:12-16

This is an amusing story from the Christian Reader.

My five-year-old grandnephew was obviously worried as he looked down the long aisle of the church where his aunt was to be married the following day. His grandmother had an idea. "I think I'll give a prize to the person who does the best job tomorrow," she told him.

We were all holding our breath the next day, but when it was time, the ringbearer performed without a hitch.
